Winner of the top prize at the ‘9th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors’ 2006 in Trento, Italy, the young conductor from Singapore DARRELL ANG is quickly emerging as one of his generation’s most brilliant podium talents. He was recently showcased at the exclusive ‘Musical Olympus’ Festival (12th edition, 2007) in St. Petersburg, which was televised nationwide across the Russian Federation, and has been re-invited to appear next year. Furthermore, he will conduct the Residentie Orkest in The Hague upon the invitation of Music Director Neeme Jävi, and will work with him at the latter’s ‘David Oistrakh Festival’ in Pärnu, Estonia.
Co-founder and Associate Conductor of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, DARRELL ANG has conducted widely in Russia, including performances with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, the Congress Orchestra of St. Petersburg, and the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra; in Europe with the Hradec Králove Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany, the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland, the Orquestra de Cadaqués in Spain, the ‘Orchestra Haydn di Trento e Bolzano’ in Italy; in Asia with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (Tokyo), the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra (Korea), and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra; as well as elsewhere with the Orchestra of the National Arts Centre of Canada and the UNAM Orchestra of Mexico. Also active in opera, he has worked with soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Academy of Young Singers and was a frequent guest at the St. Petersburg Opera and the Rimsky-Korsakov State Opera & Ballet Theatre (St. Petersburg), where he led a wide range of productions of operas by Mozart, Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Britten.
DARRELL ANG was born in Singapore and studied with the composer Leong Yoon-Pin. He played the violin, piano and bassoon, and went on to study Orchestral Conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, graduating summa cum laude in 2006. He has also studied with Jorma Panula in Helsinki, and at masterclasses with Sir Colin Davis and Lorin Maazel. He is presently a Graduate Fellow at Yale University, where he works closely with Music Director Shinik Hahm and the Yale orchestras.
